Carol L. Buckingham, P.E.

 
Carol Buckingham, the Manager and primary design engineer of Structural Designs, PLLC, is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Washington. With expertise in the structural design field of civil engineering, she is familiar with design using the International Building Code, and related codes for wood, steel, concrete and masonry. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Washington State University in 1992, where she graduated Cum Laude as a member of the Honors Program.

Before starting Structural Designs in 1998, Carol was a design engineer in the structural design firm Andersen Bjornstad Kane and Jacobs (ABKJ), in Seattle, Washington. At ABKJ, she was involved in the design of mid-rise cast-in-place and precast concrete buildings, and conducted seismic evaluations of existing buildings in accordance with FEMA 178. She was also the lead engineer for other addition and upgrade projects.

Prior to working in Seattle, Carol worked as a Structural Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla, Washington. Here she worked from an entry-level engineer to permanent assignment in the Structural Design Section. She also has previous experience as a construction inspector for the Port of Seattle at Sea-Tac International Airport.

Since starting Structural Designs, Carol has mainly focused her design work on residential and smaller commercial projects. Most of her design work has been light-frame wood construction, but she is familiar with designs in concrete, steel and other materials. She has designed projects and is knowledgeable with the typical design requirements of many Washington jurisdictions, including King, Snohomish and Kittitas Counties and many Seattle and eastside cities.

Outside of her work activities, Carol serves as the chair of the Advisory Board of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Washington State University. She is involved in neighborhood and community activities. She is also the mother of two and is married to fellow engineer, Grant Buckingham of DCI Engineers of Bellevue, Washington.
